Being a Vulnerable Writer

Just before Christmas I was reading Susan Kaye Quinn‘s Indie Author’s Survival Guide and she put me on to Brené Brown’s TED talk on Vulnerability (this is a must watch).

My main take a way was ‘vulnerability is the birthplace of joy, creativity, longing, and love.’

Vulnerability can be scary as hell. That being said, it doesn’t mean you are weak. It simply means you are willing to be open to opportunity and take risks. Or, as a friend once told me, I’m risk favorable.

I’m not always able to be open. There are times I circle my wagons and hide (sometimes in plain sight, sometimes in my bed with my covers pulled over my head). Being vulnerable is having the courage to undo the barriers and swagger forth.
