Work it, Grow it, & Perfect it.

NaNoWriMo has come and gone.  Some of us (me in particular) didn’t make the goal, while some excelled.

Now What?  That is the question asked every year.

Larry Brooks, of Storyfix.com, has the answer – Edit and Revise.  He calls on all of us to make December a month of editing and revision.  Go read his 9 point list of editing.

We are all writing for the same reason, we want to be published.  Whether the arena is large or small.  There is something thrilling about seeing your idea in print.  Whipping the basic first draft into a semblance of a readable story is hard.  It’s even harder when you are getting into the 100th or bazillionth time you’ve read your story.

I become ‘word blind’.  What do I mean by that?  Simple, I’ve read the story so much that I see what I want to see and not the mistakes.  That’s when I put it away for a little while to gain distance and perspective.

The more you write, paying attention to the craft, the better you become.

The bottom line is work it, grow it, and perfect it.

  • This post is EXACTLY what I need as I ready myself for revising my 1st of 2 novels. I have done the rewriting/readings/receipt of critiques to the screenplays I’ve written and love the process, now I’m going after my novels, b/c different rules apply for prose, I’m not sure what to expect, so thank you for this post, it is very useful and timely for me!

    • Anytime my friend. :)

  • Love the tips Larry give us on storyfix. :) great post! It’s thus now NaNoWriMoReMo ^^

  • A fresh pair of eyes always helps, too. :-) One of my best friends is awesome about reading through my stuff to find all the glaring errors.

    • Absolutely. My one friend asked me if I had lost my mind, a couple of revisions back. Not about the story, but I’d lost my ability to punctuate. :) I’m improving each day.
